Haunt, footage from self-shooting the music video
Haunt took me a while to figure out what exactly the visuals were. I always knew it needed to be outside in the dirt. Originally I'd imagined quite a cold (UK winter) colour palette and setting – woodlands, murky ponds, fog. I had to change my plans when I arrived home and remembered New Zealand bush looked and felt completely different. It forced me to embrace mosquitoes and humidity (v.s sparse forest).
This was closer to the setting Haunt was written about (hiking across borders in high heat), so I'm happy that accuracy was captured accidentally. I knew I wanted a shot on the ground in the dirt, because I wanted the visuals to represent aftermath.
It took me a few months before I realised I should use existing footage I'd shot while hiking. I love the idea of incorporating existing/archival footage into music videos – it's exactly how I made Wolf, and I've realised it feels more authentic to me to create that way right now. I've also re-learned over and over again recently that the process is the art.
