BODY unpacked
Making an EP was unexpected, but the bones of it were already there.

I started writing songs in Māpua five years ago, while I was living
in a flat with my friends by an estuary. I'd just come home after living in Canada on an island. Figuring out I liked writing songs felt like the most exciting discovery I'd ever made, I knew I liked poems and writing stories about other people, but songwriting felt completely different. The rules of journalism I'd followed for years didn't apply.

I played quietly in my bedroom for a long time until my partner at the time encouraged me to play in the lounge. My flatmates were all good artists – they painted landscapes, embroidered and made clothes. I was happy singing in the lounge but I lacked the confidence to perform outside of it. In hindsight I don't think this was a bad thing. To figure out you like something and keep it in an incubator for a few years I think probably protects your relationship to it.

I wrote hundreds of songs between then and Wolf, BODY's first song and my first public release. Somewhere in that period, I realised you can hoard songs forever, or you can share what feels right and clear space to create more.

I wanted the world of BODY to be tactile, vulnerable and intimate. The visuals and sounds I knew would be my inner world materialised. I wanted it to be the most accurate representation of myself/thoughts at that time, and I wanted to be prepared for people to not fully understand it. The only art I want to make and share is things that feel honest, and I feel like BODY is that. Most of the footage is self-shot, the songs were all written quickly and never re-written, and the finished songs are all close to their original demos.

I have a clear vision of what I want to make next, and it's definitely more outward-feeling. BODY felt like laying foundations; with music, I wanted to make my inner world visible first. I feel like I've just built the structure of a house now, and I have to be patient while I figure out how to build the rest of it.
